I found this very interesting on the mental training you were doing in your workout.I was wondering if this happened in a race such as the Ironman would you also have to fix your bike by yourself or would you get help? I am new to the sport(and have signed up for a Ironman this fall to celebrate my 60th birthday.)I am trying to put all the different parts of the Tri together.Even the mechanical things..Thanks in advance.

Al, I've been using the 'count' strategy in my running for about a year now and - wow! - what a very noticeable difference it can (and usually does) make. I'm always trying to challenge myself to hit the 92-96 cadence (quite challenging)with the ultimate goal to see if I can hit 100 strides in the minute, even if I only ever do it once. But, consistent with your theme, I can break it down even further and aim for 46-48 for 30sec and it astonishing how you are knocking each km down without even noticing (and, often, they can end up being quite quick!!).
So, yeah, good theme, good strategy. And bloody handy when you're struggling through the back half of a set of 2km repeats ;-)

Counsellor

An excellent article with lots of advice for someone like me who goes into a personal 'cave' in the week leading up to the race.
I find confidence fades and a focus on what can go wrong pervades the mind.
Confidence in the training programme and feeling well can boost confidence.

Agree totally Al. Brian's passing shook me up too, being in the same age group. How could such a great physical specimen succumb to the ravages of cancer.

Like you, I often pause for a moment in the heat of a race and think "How good is this, doing what I able to do, surrounded by hundreds of fit healthy people. Life does not get much better."

Good luck in Busso!

Arpit

That could also be caused by the fact that when you reached that point of the race, you realised there was little chance of failure.

So your subconcious hand brake was released, this allowed you to race to your potential.

It's amazing how well some of us can go once we know we only have one lap left. If only we could be released earlier.

So many athletes race with a block of wood under their accelerator pedal. A bit like driving through a "school zone"

Hi Al,

This would explain my crazy last 12 k in IM0Z on Sunday. That was when probably the caffeine took over and I was running on adrenaline rather than actual nutrition. Once I crossed the line and the adrenaline/ caffeine effect was gone I was gonesky and almost needed the drip.
