Inspiration

5 September 2017 3 Comments

So many of us have heard others say, “You’re such an inspiration” . Little do they realise that while you’re out there inspiring, you’re having to lift yourself up by the bootlaces to just keep going at times. Whenever you’re feeling like the night was too short, or the next hill repeat is just too much, remember that you’re inspiring someone, somewhere.

Far too often we can be too harsh a judge on ourselves. One of our past Prime Ministers (and we’ve had plenty of them over the last 10-15yrs) said “Life wasn’t meant to be easy”. He was right, it’s not meant to be easy all the time, unless I guess if you’re a retired Prime Minister on a big fat pension. There are inevitably going to be some tough patches.

The point I am making is that in the past we have a perfect record of “getting through the tough times”. It’s not always as fast as we’d like, or as easy as we’d like. While everyone may struggle though a tough day, a tough week, or even a tough bout of illness, these tough times are an opportunity to inspire someone else. The person being inspired may hardly know you, but knows of you.

I recently lost an old friend to Ovarian Cancer, eight years ago she was given three to five months to live. She suffered some awful days and nights, but she fought a fight that inspired the doctors who were treating her. She inspired her many friends with her courage and resilience. She didn’t know she was being inspirational, she was just doing things her way. She was just being herself one hundred percent.

My message is, do what you do as well as you can do it. Don’t set out to inspire. Set out to be the best version of yourself you can be. Be a good person, be the person your parents would be proud of. Set out to dream up some big goals, then never take your eyes off those goals. Along the way you’ll be inspiring someone else to be a better version of themselves.
