I’m always amused by students who rejoice at managing a pass in their exams. They celebrate as though they’ve won the lottery. What ever happened to shooting high? I read a report which told the story of a bunch of teenagers who were asked what they wanted most. The answer they gave was to be famous. Not famous for doing something particularly well, just famous.
Lots of us limit our outcomes by shooting too low. Is it because we’re not game to aim high, in case we fail? If we did …

Every week when I read the weekly reports from the athletes on my training programs, I want the details of performance, health, feelings etc. The news is not always good. Every workout or every big weekend of training is not going to produce PBs, or even good experiences. I’ve even known some who’ve taken their bike on the honeymoon.
As long as enough attention is given to recovery procedures, good food and good sleep habits, it’s possible to do a lot of training in the hours left after work and sleep. This is an area where we do …

Over the past fifteen years I have seen so many talented athletes give up on their dreams about one season too early. They’ve let the dream slip away when they were so close. A little bit more perseverance was all that was needed.
The talent was there, the skills were usually well developed, just needing a little more refining over another year. Maybe it’s the generation “Y” thing, where young people want to go straight to the top without doing the groundwork. But it’s not just generation “Y”. Athletes of all …
