This week has been a lot easier than the previous one. We’ve started to drop the volume of training. For the first weekend in a long while Sandy and I have had a smaller Sunday workout than our squad. The bulk of the squad are training for the Western Australian Ironman in Busselton in ten weeks.
Yesterday we cycled three hours aerobically, it was a fun ride with about twenty five of our club mates around the Bay loop. Down along the waterfront at Wynum and around to Wellington Point and …

Many of us don’t start triathlon until we’re in our mid thirties or even into our forties. We’re all late starters. I heard a great story this week of another late starter.
I did a little job for a friend who is a car dealer and greyhound owner/trainer. We’ve recently bought a car from Darryl Kavanah. He asked if I could help him secure a large picture board to his office wall.
The picture board had the photos of “Smokey Deister” a champion greyhound. Darryl told me Smokey’s story.

This has been my biggest week of training in this build up. Nineteen hours. All aerobic, except for a few sprints in the pool.
I am tired. Sandy and I did a big mid week bike ride of just under 200km with a 30km climb in the middle of it. We were in the saddle for nine hours. Probably wasted an hour with water, toilet stops and a coffee at the top of the mountain.
We finished the ride in better shape this time than last time we did it. On Wednesday …

Confidence is built one small step at a time. This week has given my wife and myself another boost in confidence. We treated this week as an easier one, with a bigger, tougher workout on the end.
We both devote time each week to our body maintenance programs. Without that we’d fall apart before we got to the start line. Sandy has her massage/body maintenance guy. I have my chiropractor/kiniesiologist and we both have an accupuncture session once each week. On top of that we aim to eat meals “which we …

I recently had another coach asking me how to get people to do something in a certain way. I really had to think about it. It never occured to me that the adult athletes in the squad would not do something in the best possible way.
I had to think about how I would get someone to do something which they didn’t want to do. I guess I’m lucky, everyone in my squad wants to know the best possible way to do the task. They all want the best results, so …

We’ve been through a few battles this week. It usually takes us more than two days to get over a big Sunday session. We always have Monday as a rest day. All I do physically is take my girls Mollie and Missie (dogs) for our coffee walk. We walk about two km, they get to say hello to all the school girls and boys passing the coffee shop. We sit on the footpath which is right near the underpass to the train station.
I’m sure those dogs know it’s Monday. If …
